In loving memory – SIFISO MAJOLA

In loving memory – SIFISO MAJOLA

It is with great sorrow that we have to inform you about the passing of Sifiso Majola on Tuesday 3 October 2017. Sifiso was a friend, a colleague, a dancer, a teacher and choreographer whose work touched many lives. He was affiliated with FLATFOOT Dance Company from Durban, South Africa. We had the honour of working with him during our Summer School in 2016, in Utrecht. We wish all of his family, friends and colleagues the courage to process this loss. He will be deeply missed. Farewell friend.

Sifiso was a born and raised a KwaMashu boy who began his dance career with PHENDUKA Dance Theatre in 2001 under the training of Sifiso Kweyama, Sbonakaliso Ndaba and Ondine Bello. While training at PHENDUKA, he developed into an extremely accomplished performer and expressed himself as a serious and dedicated student with a very strong sense of personal and professional discipline, appearing in the 2002 Daimler Chrysler award-winning work “When the outside Comes In” choreographed by Sbonakaliso Ndaba.

Majola also worked for a long stint of his formative career with Gary Gordon and Acty Tang in the First Physical Theatre Company in Grahamstown. He joined FLATFOOT in 2012 and spent 5 significant year’s with the company helping grow not just their professional performance work but also their large dance development and community engagement programmes. He has touched hundreds of lives as dancer, choreographer and teacher. In 2016 he ‘retired’ from FLATFOOT and decide to pursue a freelance career often coming into FLATFOOT for various on-going projects. He remained (and remains) a member of FLATFOOT’s family.
